Location: WHEALTH Cafe (615 Pavonia Ave, Jersey City, NJ)

Welcome to No Network UPS Tools November!

Before the following week where you have to travel in awful weather to eat around intoxicated abusive relatives you really wish you weren’t related to and then the next day wait in a line that starts in Cairo for 12 hours before the MMA fights with middle-age Moms trample everyone so you can get that one SD Card from the department store…

Come down to DEFCON 201 where we will have some cool WebSec centric lightning talks, a Hacksgiving homemade potluck and planning out chaotic-good projects to launch in early 2019!

An In-Depth Look At the Domain Name System; the Yellow Pages of the Internet

:..>The Domain Name System (DNS) is the core underpinning of the Internet; it’s used to allow users to find things like or Facebook. Despite being a core protocol, DNS is often poorly understood and rarely used correctly. This talk goes in-depth on the feature and design of DNS, while following up with attack vectors and security threats around the system.

:.>Bio: NCommander (@fossfirefighter) lives in New York and is a contributor to multiple free and open-source software projects, an Ubuntu core developer, and an active developer for the Hermes Center for Transparency working on the GlobaLeaks project. In his free time, he likes to travel, write, and play with radios.

Password “Alternatives”: Causing More Problems Than They Solve

:..>In Information Security you may have heard of articles on passwords by major technology writers such as Ben Dickson who write about how password systems are doomed and that new “password-less” systems will eventually replace them. This presentation examines the validity of known password-less systems (FIDO, Fingerprints, Face Unlock, PIN Number, Software Token, NFC) and why manipulation of language and the reality of the security landscape both practically and legally has usurped the validity of the term “password-less system” with snake-oil sales-pitches such as “blockchain”.

:..>Bio: A Co-Founder of DEFCON 201, an open group for hacker workshop projects in North East New Jersey, Sidepocket is constantly wanting to help people to get better at whatever they want to do and learn. He also has a history with NYC 2600, Radio Statler at Hackers on Planet Earth, Phone Losers of America, Museum of Urban Reclaim Spaces and The Yes Men. Find out more about DEFCON 201 at:

Hacksgiving Potluck Show & Tell

:..>To kick off Thanksgiving a week early we will do a quick show and tell of the various Hacksgiving Potluck Our Founders will go over the dishes they have prepared and if you brought your own to contribute, this is your chance to show it off! (See below for details on the Hacksgiving Potluck.)

Hacksgiving Potluck with DEFCON 201

:..>What is a Hacksgiving Potluck?

Starting off as our new tradition in November for DEFCON 201, a “Hacksgiving Potluck” is where our community members from the New Jersey area and beyond bring a homemade food or drink item that they prepared for everyone to sample!

After all talks are completed the group will take turns for those who brought their potluck item to explain what it is and how they made it. All food will be taste tested by one of our Co-Founders to make sure it is fit for human consumption. (No funny stuff.) After Show & Tell attendees are open to sample all of the food and drink items brought out on display.

:..>What To Bring: A food or drink item that is homemade. This means you prepared it yourself in your own home. That means no delivery/take out, microwave, instant hot water, ect. Bring enough of said food/drink item to feed up to about 15 people. Please have a printed/written detailed list of all ingredients included in your potluck item and make note of any potential allergens. (You might want to make alternative items for those with allergies and dietary concerns.) All food items will be sampled by one of the Co-Founders to evaluate if it is fit for human consumption before attendees feast on it. You can bring homemade alcohol but please be aware of attending minors and only those 21+ with ID will be allowed to drink intoxicating homemade beverages.

:..>DEFCON 201 will expand into video media in late September. We will be launching various videos including an Introduction, Member Spotlights, Archived Lightning Talks, Tutorials, Directions and more on the DTube, Vimeo and YouTube Mirror platforms. We will also have downloadable copies on the DEFCON 201 NextCloud of select media for DEFCON 201 Members who want hard copies of videos. If you want to be in the Introduction, Member Spotlights or Archive Lighting Talks you can inquire into us about signing our DEFCON 201 Consent Forums and we will walk you through the process. Those who have not signed our DEFCON 201 Consent Forums during meetings will NOT be recorded in Video or Audio as per our policy. Furthermore, any instances of media recording photo/video/audio via DEFCON 201 Staff will be alerted to all president attendees beforehand prior to recording.
