Here are some hacker and STEM activities this week in the 201 New Jersey and Adjacent NYC Area:

— Tech Talks in Military Park — Tech Can Enhance Cities —

Date: August 28th

Location: Military Park, Reading Room (5 Park Pl, Newark, NJ 07102, Newark, NJ)

Time: 6:00 PM — 7:30 PM

Military Park Partnership, Code for Newark, and the Newark’s Office of Information Technology are launching the second annual Tech Talk series in Military Park. The goal of the program is to engage local residents, office workers, and students in discussions on technology.

Each week, there will be different panelists from large tech companies and small startup organizations speaking about the changing tech world in Newark. After the panel, there will be demonstrations of new tech devices ranging from a Tesla to a phone app with free giveaways included!

This week: NJII’s Tom Motyka and Brick City Tech on How Technology Can Be Utilized to Enhance Cities.

— JC FabLab Electronics 101 & Internet of Things Camp —

Date: August 28th — August 31st

Location: JC FabLab (195 New York Avenue, 4E, Jersey City, NJ 07307)

Time: 9:00 AM — 3:00 PM (Every Day)

This promises to be really thrilling for your kids who are interested in creative application of electronics. During this camp week, kids will learn basic electronic components, how to create their own circuits, and how to create a fantastic custom case for their chosen project. We’ll also delve into the world of IoT (Internet of Things). Using data from the internet, our SAM labs kits, and their own custom fabricated ‘thing’, they’ll activate and express data into a real-world motor-driven vehicle or creature. And they’ll start with the fundamentals of design — drawing and gaining understanding of the physical nature of circuit design — with explorations in engineering and aesthetics. Guest professional PCB designers and Electrical Engineers will talk about what they do day to day, and help kids get inspired by showing projects they worked on. The guests presenters will be truly remarkable — they’ve worked on everything from hearing aids to the first Mars Rover. Note**This camp is a 4 Day session**.

Price: $530.00 (this includes $50 in electronics & specialized material fees)

— NYC 2600 September Meet Up —

Date: September 1st

Location: The Atrium at 875, 53rd Street and 3rd Avenue (Lower Level)

Time: 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM

The New York City 2600 meeting is a monthly gathering of local hackers, phreaks, nerds, geeks, sympathizers, and more unlabelable folks.

The meeting officially starts at 5:00 PM, but sometimes things will take another hour to really start up. By around 6:00, most of the tables in the central area and scattered tables elsewhere are meeting-goers. People chat about all kinds of subjects from hacking, to phreaking, to legitimate sysadmin-ing, to conspiracies, to how many fish you can name, to what your favorite cartoon is, to absolutely anything else. You can wander around and join any conversation which catches your ear, you can sometimes chat with 2600 Magazine staff who float around, you can play with gadgets people sometimes bring, or you can just eat some overly expensive pizza. If you see any of us around, please stop by and say hi, as we love meeting new meeting goers! We’ll also be happy to answer any questions you may have to the best of our ability.

The 2600 meetings were started by Emmanuel Goldstein and 2600 Magazine as an open forum for technology enthusiasts to meet, greet, teach, learn, and simply hang out. In keeping with the spirit of 2600’s meeting guidelines, we meet in a public area. It keeps things accessible to everyone.
